Most people know that cannabis has a variety of medical uses, but few people know why the cannabis plant provides relief for conditions as different as arthritis, cancer, anxiety, and epilepsy. Cannabis’ versatility as a medicine is due to the variety of different natural compounds it contains, all of which have different effects on the body. These useful compounds are called cannabinoids.
Cannabichromene is one of the lesser-known cannabinoids, but it certainly isn’t one of the less important ones. Along with its better-known counterparts tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), cannabichromene plays an essential role in cannabis’ ability to regulate and heal different systems in the body.
What Are Cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. Researchers have identified over 80 different cannabinoids so far. Two of the best-known cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which produces the “high” effect associated with cannabis, and cannabidiol (CBD), which is non-psychoactive and has many medical applications. A third important cannabinoid is cannabichromene (CBC). Like cannabidiol, cannabichromene is not psychoactive and can treat a wide variety of medical conditions.
The human body naturally produces its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids, which are functionally identical to cannabis-based cannabinoids like cannabichromene and cannabidiol. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for maintaining balance throughout the body, and almost every aspect of health relies on it in some way. The immune system, the nervous system, mood, and memory all depend on the endocannabinoid system.
Many diseases and medical conditions are associated with dysfunction in the endocannabinoid system. In some cases, augmenting the endocannabinoid system with cannabis-derived cannabinoids can relieve symptoms and even heal the body of disease. Since cannabis-derived cannabinoids mimic human-produced endocannabinoids, compounds like cannabichromene and cannabidiol are an effective and safe way to treat many different health problems.
The Medical Applications of Cannabichromene
Like CBD and other cannabinoids, cannabichromene can be used to treat many conditions. CBC has the advantage of being non-psychoactive as well. So far, researchers have found that CBC has the following benefits.
- Kills bacterial and fungal infections: Cannabichromene has strong antifungal and antibacterial properties. A 1981 study by the University of Mississippi found that CBC can kill E. coli, staph, and black mold, among other things.
- Relieves pain: Though CBC isn’t as powerful a painkiller as its counterparts CBD and THC are, this compound has been shown to reduce pain by itself as well as in combination with cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol.
- Promotes bone growth: Cannabichromene can stimulate bone growth, which may lead to stronger bones and less risk of osteoporosis in old age.
- Soothes inflammation: Like other cannabinoids, CBC fights inflammation throughout the body, especially when it’s used in combination with CBD or THC. Inflammation goes hand-in-hand with the majority of diseases, so this anti-inflammatory effect could have far-reaching repercussions in treating many different conditions.
- Relieves anxiety and depression: Two of cannabichromene’s biggest strengths are its powerful antidepressant and anxiolytic properties. Researchers have found that CBC relieves anxiety ten times more effectively than cannabidiol does.
- Stimulates brain growth: One of cannabidichromene’s most unique and intriguing qualities is its ability to stimulate neurogenesis, or the production of new cells in the brain. New brain cells continue developing in the hippocampus throughout a person’s life, and these cells play an important role in learning and memory. When new brain cells don’t grow and mature correctly, conditions like Alzheimer’s disease can develop. CBC could have the potential to fight cognitive decline in aging adults.
